The "Eternal fire of Chimera" - a rare natural phenomenon
The Olympos National Park close to Dalaman is a nice option for a day trip. You can explore the magnificent landscape stretched over 700 hectares, admiring the impressive 2,366-metre-high peak of mount Tahtalo. Here you can witness the unique phenomenon of “eternal fire on Chimera”, which appears as flames from the mountain bedrock. This natural phenomenon receives its name from a mythical creature called Chimera. Legend has it that this fire breathing creature was left in the mountain long ago, but that a man named Bellerophone and his flying horse Pegasus slayed the menacing monster. According to the legend, Bellerophone then married the daughter of King Lobates as a reward for his bravery.
The Lively Atmosphere of Fethiye
Experience exciting street life in the neighbouring port and market city of Fethiye. Unlike many other tourist places in Turkey, Fethiye is home to many locals. As a result, local tourism hasn’t completely demolished the trade of articles reflected in the variety of shops with interesting displays. You can buy genuine Turkish souvenirs such as hand-woven rugs, and traditional clothing. The circular market place here has a very lively atmosphere, where grocery shops offer all kinds of delicious products. Right in the middle of the market there is a 20-metre-long counter, which is used to sell fresh fish and seafood. You can then take your purchase to a nearby restaurant and have a delicious dish cooked for you!
Who is “Amyntas”?
Just outside Fethiye you can visit tombs cut into rock, dating back to 4th century B.C. These were house and temple tombs created by Lycians, as in Turkey the dead are never buried under the ground. Here you can reach the largest grave through an extremely beautiful door with attractive ornaments and bronze fitting. Behind the door lies an 8-metre-high chamber with three graves. One of them is engraved with letters “Amyntas, son of Hermagios”. Who was he? Unfortunately, we might never know. They say, he was an officer of Alexander the Great. His name suggests he was of Macedonian origin. Book your flight to Dalaman with FlyDoha and perhaps you will be able to unlock the secrets of the grave yourself!
