Travel Tips to Honolulu (HNL)
Honolulu: Hawaii's lively capital
Honolulu is, in every respect, the main attraction in the US state of Hawaii. There is the finest selection of hotels and restaurants, plus recreational activities to suit everybody. Shopping in Honolulu is varied and enjoyable. There are also several museums and art exhibitions, as well as live music and theatre performances. After taking a flight to Honolulu, you should visit their world-famous beaches - especially Waikiki. You can also venture on hikes and climbing trips to explore the beautiful flora and fauna on the island of Oahu.
King Kalakaua’s ʻIolani Palace
Did you know the palace of King David Kalakaua, which was completed in 1882, was the first building in Hawaii to have electric light, telephones and flushing toilets? Leisurely explore the interior decor of the palace with its ornate furniture and portraits of the Hawaiian royal family. You can also view the wonderful display of gifts to the Hawaiian royalty from around the world. A special feature is the stairway made of Acacia koa. Other highlights of the palace include the throne room and the dining room (“blue room”). In the basement lies a mighty collection of swords, jewels and two golden royal crowns on display.
Enjoy the Pali Lookout
Although there are many beautiful scenic points throughout Honolulu, the Pali Lookout holds a very special attraction to visitors. Enjoy a comfortable drive on the Pali Highway and reach the Nu’uanu Pali Lookout with its impressive panorama of the surrounding cliffs (around 300 metres) and to areas on the east coast. Incidentally, the Battle of Nu’uanu took place at this point in 1795, where the troops of King Kamehameha I won the battle. In 1810, the King finally achieved his ultimate objective: to unite all Hawaiian Islands into one kingdom.
Hawaii's largest museum: A rich display of nature and cultural history
The Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum was founded by Charles Reed Bishop in 1889, in memory of his late wife. It is currently the largest museum in Hawaii, where you can tour the royal family’s heirlooms and other natural and historical exhibits about Hawaii and Polynesian culture. Located in the historic region of Kalihi, the museum also holds a very comprehensive collection of approximately 13.5 million dissected insects!
