Travel Tips to Sarajevo (SJJ)
Enjoy the Sights of Sarajevo
Sarajevo lies in the middle of the Dinaric Alps and is the capital and governing city of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Although the Bosnian war destroyed much of this charming city, you can still see some impressive sights, which makes a trip to Sarajevo highly recommendable. The Miljacka and Bosna rivers flow through the city, and it is nestled between mountains on three sides, making it a beautiful destination to visit. And despite its recent troubled history you can pass your time in the city browsing through the old bazaar, admiring its fascinating Balkan architecture or trying the local delicacies. Whatever you choose to do, book flights to Sarajevo with FlyDoha and you won’t be disappointed!
The Famous Latin Bridge in Sarajevo
Between the northern embankment road Obala Kulina Bana and the Austrijski Trq lying on the other side of the Miljacka, is the Latin Bridge of Sarajevo. This stone-arched bridge is one of the oldest buildings in the city and is known for being the scene of the assassination of the Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand. During a visit, you can see a wall plaque commemorating this historic event which sparked the beginning of the First World War, at the northern end of the bridge. The name of this originally Ottoman structure comes from the Latin Quarter, a historical district of the city.
The Tunnel Museum: A Memorial of the Bosnian War
As a result of the Bosnian War, Sarajevo was cut off from the outside world from 1992 to 1995. Underneath the runway of Sarajevo Airport, an 800 m long, 1m wide and max 1.5 m high escape tunnel was dug to the nearby settlement of Butmir. You can still see a 20m long section of the original tunnel at the Kolar family house. You can find some interesting evidence from the time of the civil war, including documentary films, and the Loren carts with which people and materials were moved. This is an important place to visit, which shows the hardships of the people during the civil war years.
Visit Baščaršija-Platz in Sarajevo
In the middle of the old city of Sarajevo in Baščaršija Square, you will find an old Ottoman fountain. This is the so-called Serbilj-Fountain which is presented in the form of a kiosk. This location is a favourite tourist meeting place and always offers great photo opportunities. Especially in the evening, the fountain is lit up with many different colours and is very eye-catching. Around the Baščaršija square there are numerous little craft shops in which you can buy typical Bosnian copper coffee sets or pens made from empty ammunition shells. You can fortify yourself during your visit with local dishes and real Bosnian coffee in the little cafes and čevabdžinicas (restaurants where only Ćevapčići, a local dish, is exclusively served). Book a flight to Sarajevo, and you will have the chance to see this interesting metropolis up close for yourself.
