Travel Tips to Vilnius (VNO)
Flights to Vilnius – Lithuania’s pearl
You want to discover Lithuania’s capital? You should take some time to explore the historical city centre of Vilnius. The old city was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994, and contains sights like Gediminas’ Tower. It is the last preserved part of Vilnius Castle, and offers a beautiful view of the city from its observation tower. Discover Vilnius University and the Gate of Dawn in the historical city wall.
The Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania
The king’s castle, the roots of which can be traced back to the 4th century, was destroyed by conquerors at the beginning of the 19th century. Before that it was the residence of the Lithuanian-Polish Royal Family. In 2000, the Lithuanian parliament decided to rebuild the palace. Four wings are being rebuilt section by section, and made open to the public. Also, exhibits of the National Museum moved into the new rooms of the glamorous building.
A unique view over Vilnius from the TV Tower
Vilnius’ TV Tower is about 1071 feet high, which makes it not only one of the tallest buildings in the country, but also one of the tallest buildings in Eastern Europe. From the rotating observation platform, which is around 540 feet high, you’ll experience a unique view over the entire city. If visibility is clear, you can see up to 30 miles into the distance. If you want to enjoy a coffee high above the city, try the restaurant “Milky Way”. You can also get married here, by the way.
The Vilnius Picture Gallery – a must-see for art lovers
You should plan a visit to the picture gallery in the Palace of Duke Chodkiewicz. The glamorous palace and its neo-classic interior is the ideal backdrop for art exhibitions. The permanent exhibition is dedicated to the art of Lithuania between the 16th and 20th centuries. The gallery is open Tuesdays to Saturdays between 11 am and 6 pm, and Sundays between 12 pm and 5 pm. To avoid long queues, you should visit right after opening.
